How to Make a Skirt and Top From a Dress
Waistband material (size varies by person)
Sewing machine preferred to hand stitching
Step 1 - Take your dress and mark where the waist of the skirt would be with fabric chalk and cut along the line using the fabric scissors.
Step 2 - The top piece of the dress can be used as the top! The bottom piece will be used as material for the skirt.
Step 1 - Take some waistband fabric and cut out a piece that is 3 inches wide and the length of your waist minus 3 inches. Alternatively take the waistband fabric and wrap it around your waist to get the correct size of the waistband material.
Step 2 - Lay the piece of waistband fabric so that both of the end edges are lined up. Pin and sew along the edge with a 3/8 inch seam allowance. This should form a loop.
Step 3 - Turn the waistband inside out and insert the skirt material inside the waistband. Pin the two pieces together.
Step 4 - Sew on the waistband with a 3/8 inch seam allowance. Slightly stretch the waistband as you sew, but do not stretch the skirt fabric.
Flip up the waistband and your skirt is ready to be worn!
